SURVIVOR LYNN SHINER TO SPEAK AT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SERVICE CENTER ANNUAL EVENT

In recognition of 40 years of service to victims of domestic violence and to honor Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Lynn Shiner, Harrisburg, PA, a domestic violence survivor will be the guest speaker at Domestic Violence Service Center’s (DVSC) “Empty Place at the Table.  Lynn has 37 years experience in the state government. She came to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency with a passion to ease crime victims’ pain after she experienced a tragedy of her own. Her young children, Jen and Dave, were murdered on Christmas Day 1994. She is committed to making changes to improve the lives of other victims and advocates for protection of children through the Jen and Dave Law.

This annual event is a memorial to victims who have lost their lives to domestic violence in Luzerne County.  It will be held at noon on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 in the Rotunda of the Luzerne County Courthouse and is open to the public.

DVSC will host various events during the month of October such as informational tables on local college campuses and hospitals, and outreach programs to local businesses. A list of events through the end of the month is attached.

Since 1987, October has been nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. That same year marked the launch of the first national domestic violence toll-free hotline.  In his proclamation delivered on September 30, 2016, President Obama “Called on all Americans to speak out against domestic violence and support local efforts to assist victims of these crimes in finding the help and healing they need.”

Since 1976, the Domestic Violence Service Center (DVSC) has been providing quality services to battered and homeless women and their children. DVSC is a member agency of United Way of Wyoming of Valley and Greater Hazleton, Inc.  For more information on the Domestic Violence Service Center, Domestic Violence Awareness month events in your area, or to learn how you can help to stop the cycle of abuse, please visit www.domesticviolenceservice.org or call 1-800-424-5600.
